It is easy for worship leaders to neglect our influence. We focus on fifteen minutes of singing and fail to see our ministry is more than music. We must be aware that our actions leave an impact on and off the stage.
Here are 10 easy ways to blow your influence as a worship leader.
1. Make “Excellent Sound” Your Only Goal
Care more about physical performance than worship in the heart. Complain when you do not have the right monitor mix. Only play songs that you know are popular with the congregation.
2. Only Worry About Worship That Takes Place On The Stage
Do not worry about shepherding your worship team. Anyone who wants to play can play regardless of their spiritual life. Do not allow them to take breaks.
3. Use The Music Ministry To Promote Your Own Agenda
Make sure everyone knows you are the best on the team. The music ministry must be the priority for your team members. Only play songs that you wrote.
4. Only Pray In Public
Neglect your quiet time with God. Use words that you would not normally use. Say long prayers so others will think you are spiritual.
5. Give Only Critical Feedback
Make others feel bad when they mess up. Highlight how you would do things better. Never give positive feedback.
6. Do Not Give Others The Opportunity To Exercise Their Gifts
Save the best dates for yourself. Do not give others the opportunity to pray or lead devotions. The direction and flow of the music set is not up for discussion.
7. Play Favorites Based On Skills
Only play with people who meet your standards of excellence. Have double-standards for punctuality and practice. Do not listen to the opinions of your less talented team members.
8. Do Not Humble Yourself
Leave all the setup and tear down to the AV team. Accept all the credit when things go well. Never thank your team for serving.
9. Forget About Your Congregation
Do not try to get to know others. Only worry about those on the worship team. Never sit with strangers.
10. Neglect Your Family
Spend more time thinking about your set than spending time with your family. Get angry when they give you negative feedback. Enjoy the power that comes with being a worship leader more than the responsibility that comes with being a family member.
I am not a perfect worship leader. I write this as a warning for us to see where we fall short. And by the power of the Holy Spirit, we can serve in the strength that God supplies. Be humble, wise, and look to Christ who shepherds our hearts and restores our souls.
