Seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem, a people waited. They waited for a prophetic word from the Lord. They waited for deliverance from their enemies. They waited for an end to the injustice of their leaders. Most of all, they waited for their God.
God’s promise to his waiting people is stunning:
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
His promise is “to us”―to the people of God several millennia ago, but also to us―to you and me, the people of God today. To us comes this child, this son, who is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Wrapped within each of these names are precious promises of the character and work of our Savior.
This Advent season, four authors will walk us through these four names of Christ from Isaiah 9:6 in a short series of devotionals. Beginning on December 2, entries will be published weekly until Christmas. You can look for them at the start of each week on our blog as well as compiled in an online magazine.
